Day 17 ~ 22nd August 2000

Palas de Rei to O Pino

Day 16 ~ Day 18
A typical Galician grain store.

The weather was windy when we set out, and the terrain hilly which made for tough going. This was a very ordinary day, we passed through a couple of small towns with little to note, but we were now closing in on our final destination, Santiago.

The wind was now so strong that at times we had to pedal downhill. The skies were becoming darker by the minute, so we decided to stop at the first hostal or bar that we came across. After several more kms, we found a nice clean hospedaje near to O Pino and Santa Irene which had a barn where we could store the bikes, perfect. Within a short time, the heavens opened and we thanked our lucky stars that we had avoided another soaking. Not longer after we saw other pilgrims come dripping in.

We had our first encounter with the some what unusual local white wine, Ribeiro, which is very cloudy, so much so that you cannot see through it. It has an unusual taste but was worth sampling, although I have to admit that it is not for those with a fragile stomach.
